1998 News

December 14th, 1998

I know a lot of people are looking for guitar tablature and there isn't much out there. Check out the January 1999 issue of Guitar Techniques! They give Parisienne Walkways the full treatment: transcription with tablature and two backing tracks on the accompanying CD. Note that the version they give is not the 1978 album version, but something closer to the 1993 live version.

I found yet another Castle CD yesterday, this one entitled The Collection (UK 1998, ESM CD 655). This is not the same as their other CD with the same title released some years ago! No surprise with the tracks: it is still the early 80s stuff originally released by Jet Records. (Notice the font used on the cover.)

Residents of the North American continent will be happy to hear that Out in the Fields was released yesterday, December 1st. (Virgin 8 46687 2) This is the 1-CD edition. The insert is exactly the same as in the UK release. Nothing to get excited about, really, except it is cheaper than an import.

A few more words about Out in the Fields. The Swedish 2-CD limited edition is already out of print according to the Network of Wild Ones. Copies now being sold have only one CD. The UK 2-CD limited edition, though featuring the same tracks as its Swedish counterpart, is a disappointment. It seems Virgin UK used whatever "artwork" was leftover from Ballads & Blues... Even if you can't read a word of the language, the Swedish insert is ten times more interesting! A 1-CD edition seems to have a US release date of December 1st. (No official word from Virgin America yet, but some online stores are advertizing it.) If anyone has info about the Japanese release (VJCP-36078), please .

A couple of ads in Goldmine mention soon-to-be-released remastered re-issues of Cozy Powell albums Octopuss, Over the Top, and Tilt on vinyl. Stay tuned for more info.

The Swedish issue of Out in the Fields has reference CDMOORE 1 (or 7243 8 46708 2 5). The insert is quite nice, unfortunately I can't read Swedish. What I can do is give a track list:

Disc 1: Out in the Fields / Over the Hills and Far Away / Run for Cover / Parisienne Walkways (Live in Belfast 18 Dec 1984) / Empty Rooms (1985 Version) / The Loner / Military Man / After the War / Cold Day in Hell / Wild Frontier / Still in Love with You (1985) / Wishing Well / Friday on my Mind / Still Got the Blues / Ready for Love

Disc 2: Stop Messin' Around (Live in Belfast 18 Dec 1984) / Out in the Fields (Live in Manchester 23 Sep 1985) / Reach for the Sky (Live in London 28 Sep 1985) / The Loner (Live in London 2 Apr 1987) / All Messed up (Live in Stockholm 25 Apr 1987) / Thunder Rising (Live in Stockholm 25 Apr 1987) / Over the Hills and Far Away (Live in Stockholm 25 Apr 1987) / Military Man (Live in Stockholm?) / Devil in her Heart / Emerald / Livin' on Dreams (Remix)

My thanks to P. Winberg of Virgin Records Sweden.

The UK limited-edition 2-CD Out in the Fields has reference number CDVX 2871 for those of you who like to have these kinds of details. I do not have the reference number of the Swedish issue. (Anyone?)

I came across a Gary Moore interview on the Paul Guy Guitars website in Sweden. You might want to check it out. (Don't worry, it's been translated.)

Lots of news this time! First and perhaps most importantly, the 20th issue of GAZ was sent out on November 1st. If you are not on the mailing list yet, I suggest you do something about it right now; just follow the link.

Let's begin with new releases. Virgin Records' double-CD compilation Out in the Fields was released on October 19th in the UK and on the 23rd in Sweden. The covers are different; the one on the left is the Swedish, the one on the right the British (remind you of anything?). The complete track listing is included in GAZ #20 (see above). Readers of Record Collector will have no doubt noticed the little ad for the CD squeezed in somewhere in this month's issue.

Greg Lake has a new CD out, From the Underground: The Official Greg Lake Bootleg. Included are two tracks with Gary Moore: Retribution Drive and 21st Century Schizoid Man, both recorded in 1981 at the Palladium in New York.

New bootlegs! Blood of Emeralds (Kawasaki 1989), Wild Frontier Japanese Tour 1987 (Tokyo 1987), Shadows of the Past (UK 1984), and Colosseum II's Denmark '76. According to Ole-Johan, all are CD-Rs. This unfortunately seems to be the new trend for bootlegs.

The bible is being formatted in HTML for release on CD-ROM. Considering the size of the project, it won't be ready for several months.

And finally: If you have 15,000 British pounds to invest, send them to me! No, I mean, one of Gary Moore's Les Paul is for sale. (No, not THAT one!) Details in GAZ #20.

October 4th, 1998

According to the Northern Light, the release of Out in the Fields has been pushed back to October 21st. The good news is that the above-mentioned Northern Light has a list of tracks! Though none of the material has not already been released, it will be nice to listen to the 12-minute live version of The Loner over and over again without fear of destroying the groove of the 12" single.

Some online stores are already advertizing the "best of" CD from Virgin Records. Entitled Out in the Fields (how original!), it is to be released on October 12th (in the UK).

British magazines can be a little slow in making their way over here in California (depending on who imports them). And so it was only a few days ago that I found a copy of Guitarist, the May 1998 issue... The Sound Advice section is Gary's. A brief interview with Ian Taylor and an even briefer one with Graham Lilley, "keeper of some of the best known guitars". Check out Gary's gear!

Yet another live CD soon to be released on Bondage Music (Japan): At The BBC. Tracks from 1984 and 1986. Further details as they become available.

May 7th, 1998

Rebound Records has just released Thin Lizzy's Remembering Part 1 on CD (314 520 513-2). The front cover is the same as the original 1976 Decca LP except that it is slightly crooked! One track has been added (Honesty Is No Excuse). $9 is all it cost me at a major chain music store.

April 20th, 1998

Issue #18 of GAZ was distributed yesterday! Lots of interesting news, as usual. If you're wondering what Gary Moore is up to these days, I suggest you check out GAZ #18 (GAZ Page).

NO TOUR DATES. I get so many email messages asking me about tour dates that I can't answer them all. My apologies if your email remains unanswered; don't give up!

March 20th, 1998

The February issue of Guitar Techniques featured Thin Lizzy's Still in Love with You, the 1974 version with Gary Moore. Also in that issue, an interview with Scott Gorham.

The April issue of the same magazine features two versions of the Easybeats' Friday on my Mind: the original and Gary Moore's version.

Once again the layout of this news page has been changed! It should make it easier to spot the most recent additions. I hope you like it.

Look at what I found in my (e)mailbox this week!

Hi, My name is Robin Lavery. I'm from Belfast and I played drums in a group with Gary in the early sixties. I was fourteen and Gary must have been twelve. The group was called the 'Beat Boys' and we rehearsed in Gary's house off the Newtownards Road in Belfast. He lived in a nice part of town almost opposite Stormount...the N.Ireland parliament buildings. Our first dates were in the Queen's Hall in Holywood-about six miles from Belfast. Gary's father ran the Saturday night dances and we opened up for the 'big name' bands. Even at twelve Gary was a brilliant guitarist-no mean feat on a Lucky Seven guitar. The Beat Boys lasted a couple of years and we sort of lost contact. He started playing at a blues club called the Maritime. Van Morrison and Them were also playing there at the time. A few years later my band did some concerts with Thin Lizzy in Ireland, but that was before Gary joined them. Eric Bell was playing guitar. I hope that this is of some interest.
Yes sir, it is a great interest to all of us! Thanks for allowing me to post your message.
